In 2003, the African Union (AU) recognised the African Diaspora as its “sixth region”, joining the East, West, Central, Northern and Southern regions of the continent.

It was a concerted effort by the organisation to recognise the importance of the Africans living abroad and the substantial and positive financial, political and social impact they continue to have on their home continent. This decision has led to increased collaborations between Africans across the globe.

This year, the AU celebrates its golden jubilee and, following the official partnership between the Youth Office of the African Union Commission and The Future Awards Africa, Applause Africa is collaborating with the The Future Project to presents the quarterly event series – African Exchange.

This event, held every year, includes a one-hour panel discussion highlighting the efforts and importance of young Africans with a focus on the diaspora and their contributions to the advancement of their communities and Africa. Our intergenerational panel discussion titled ‘The role of the diaspora within the African Union; how the AU can utilise the diaspora to realise its objectives’, hones in on the topic of harnessing the power of a young actively engaged diaspora population, and the benefits to collaborating with them effectively on a variety of projects.

Debo Folorunsho, Founder of Applause Africa stated, “The Diaspora has thousands of Africans who serve as positive role models and add value to their society. We believe it is our duty to celebrate and raise awareness of such role models to further take charge of the narrative of Africans and to inspire their generation. Applause Africa strongly believes that it is important to celebrate leaders of today in order to inspire leaders of tomorrow. The partnership between The Future Project and Applause Africa further demonstrates our commitment to championing the cause of highlighting the imperative role that the youth play in Africa’s development.”

Adebola Williams, Founder and Director of The Future Project, further emphasised that, “Africa’s problem for a long time has been captured under ‘hopelessness’. Young Africans here and abroad have the power to change that, and that is why The Future Awards has taken the cause in the last seven years to present strong positive images and continues to collaborate with organisations like Applause Africa and the AU to ensure that young Africans are right at the heart of the continent’s forward momentum.”
