Judges arrest: DSS acted out of its mandate – Melaye

Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial district has said the invasion of judges residence by the Department of State Security was wrong, even though “they are corrupt.”

The DSS had raided the homes of Adeniyi Ademola, Nnamdi Dimgba,  a federal high court judge; Walter Onnoghen, a justice of the supreme court judge; and Sylvester Ngwuta, another supreme court justice.

The agency had claimed the judges were involved in corrupt practices and some money were recovered from their houses.

Dino Melaye, however said the DSS acted out of its mandate.

He said, “The invasion of Judges residences by the DSS is totally wrong and not acceptable,” he said.

“I have studied the ACT setting up DSS,NIA and DIA and can conclude that the DSS operated outside their core mandate. There is no doubt that many Judges are corrupt. It is also important to state the need to sanitise the judiciary of corruption that makes judges give commercial rulings that create terrible precedence in our legal system.

“Judges have no immunity and can be tried and should be tried but the use of DSS is absolutely wrong. The DSS, even when they overstretch themselves and conduct investigations on the judges, they ought to hand over their findings to the appropriate institution of government i.e the police or National Judicial Council, for prosecution and punishment.

“The rule of law is a core value of governance and therefore must be guided jealousy. Prosecution of civil and corrupt cases in not the responsibility of DSS. Internal security is the main stay of the DSS and they should stick to that. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigerian.”
