Just In: Brazil impeaches first female President

After months of political tussle, President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil has finally been impeached by the Brazilian senate thus bringing to an end 13 years that her left-wing Workers’ Party has been in power.

Rousseff was impeached by the Senate for allegedly manipulating the country’s budget. She, however, denies the allegation.

According to the BBC, 61 senators passed a vote for her impeachment while 20 voted against her removal.

With the 61 votes, the required two-third votes constitutionally required for her removal was met.

Rousseff deputy, now acting president, Michel Temer, will take over government and serve out Rousseff’s tenure which ends on January 1, 2019.

Temer was sworn in May as acting president of Brazil following the suspension of Rousseff by the country’s senate. He will be sworn in as the President on Wednesday.

Rousseff is the first female president of Brazil.
