Director of Radio Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu- who has been incarcerated since October 2014- may make bail in a few days.
M U Udechukwu, the lawyer of the Biafra leader, on Monday, urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to release him, noting that the alleged offence is a bailable one.
He stated that the Criminal Justice Act, 2015, stipulated bail for anyone not accused of a capital offence.
“The right to agitate is inherent in a democracy. People must not be denied of their rights to protest by way of being kept in custody,” he said. “If national security was a ground to throw people into detention the Criminal Justice Act would have said so.”
Consequently, Justice James Tsoho adjourned till Friday for ruling on the case of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Kanu is on trial alongside the duo of Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.
The trio are being charged with treason and the defendant in the case is the Federal Government.
Kanu and the two others were arraigned on January 20, after which the judge ordered the Department of State Service to release the accused persons for remand in Kuje Prison.
