Perhaps, this is why Lagosians don’t use the Ojota pedestrian bridge

Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), a law enforcement unit attached to the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment, on Monday, forced pedestrians to make use of the overhead bridges along Ikorodu expressway in Lagos.

KAI officials were strategically placed at different bus stops at Ojota, ready to arrest and fine individuals who fail to use the bridge.

However, this caused a massive human traffic as the Ojota bridge – obviously – couldn’t hold the large number of persons making use of it.

While the overhead bridges – strategically placed around busy roads in Lagos – is important for obvious reasons of road safety, it is pertinent to question the effects of over-congestion on pedestrians using these bridges.

Such congestion of humans in an enclosed space is a good breeding ground for pickpockets and other miscreants that will take advantage of situations like this to perpetuate all sorts of unimaginable crimes.

It is even more saddening to imagine what will happen in case of a stampede on the bridge or a medical emergency.

The Lagos state government should, as a matter of utmost urgency, create other means of pedestrian movement so as to ensure human safety and avoid other crisis that will incur further hardship on citizens in the state.
