Lassa fever berths in Abuja, patient dies at National Hospital

There’s been an outbreak of the Lassa fever in the Kubwa area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Federal Government announced on Wednesday that a patient died from the fever at the National Hospital Abuja.

The patient was reportedly brought into the hospital unconscious, from a private hospital in Kubwa where he was admitted for eight days.

During a visit to the National Hospital, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, called on health workers at all levels “to be more vigilant and look out for patients with symptoms of Lassa fever.”

Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Health, Boade Akinola, released a statement saying that the minister has instructed that ‘all primary and secondary contacts of the victim should be tracked’.

The Minister urged Abuja residents against panicking, advising them to ‘maintain high level vigilance and present themselves for test if they feel unhealthy or they feel symptoms of Lassa fever’.

Symptoms of Lassa fever includes high fever, stooling, tiredness and vomiting adding that self-medication should be avoided at this period.
