[The Legislative Blog]: Dogara! Dogara!! Dogara!!!

It was theatre in its most crude form at the House of Representatives sitting today.

Dogara! Dogara!! Dogara!!! The honourable members of the House of Reps chanted. It’s like when the Yunkai slaves sight the Khaleesi, the mother of dragons and the breaker of chains who bought their freedom from their previous masters and they chant Mhysa! Mhysa!! Mhysa!!!

What excites these men so much? After a 7-week recess that saw the beginning of a recession in the country, elected legislators resumed sessions today. Through the break, Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin, the face of the infamous budget padding scandal, had a field day calling names and making revelations. So the Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Hon. Emmanuel Orker-Jev pulled an ICYMI on the House. The honourable reminded the House of Hon Jibrin’s recess-long bants.

Now that the matter was brought to the fore in the house, we did not hear Hon Jibrin’s voice o. He was reportedly quiet throughout the deliberations and later walked out quietly. Please what happened to bragging rights? After that 207-tweet thread and subsequent revealing posts that dominated news headline last month, it is indeed shocking that Senator Jibrin maintained calmness at this session.

While all this happened behind the closed doors of the lower chamber, a group of protesters were outside calling for Hon Jibrin’s head. All they want is for the man to be suspended and then prosecuted for the following reasons: scandalising the House, contempt of the House, contract splitting, operating of foreign account, money laundering and living above his means. The latter accusation has to be the most ridiculous; don’t we all live above our means?

According to the leader of the group, Mr Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, Hon Jibrin is plotting to destabilise the parliament. “Jibrin has obliged himself to negative democratic influences who are willing to go the extra mile to derail democracy. This must be condemned in its entirety”, he added.

Petitions have been submitted by the protesters to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Hon Jibrin. From inside the House, he has been referred to the Ethics  and Privileges committee. Fair enough!

But do we already see the clear winner in all of these?

Dogara! Dogara!! Dogara!!!
