[The Legislative Blog]: Between President Buhari, Hon Dogara and private meetings

We’re sure you caught the news about the closed door meeting the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara held with President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday.

Under normal circumstances, this sort of meeting should not raise eyebrows but we can’t help to ask what’s up with the duo of President Buhari and Hon Dogara. This is the third time the Speaker and the President are meeting “behind closed doors” and each time, Hon Dogara has refused to share at least a slight idea of whatever was discussed.

In another similar situation, there was a third man, Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal and this was barely two weeks ago. So do you get why we’re curious now?

Besides being nosey and stuff, we’re genuinely interested in what the two men discussed in yesterday’s meeting that lasted over an hour. From news reports, Hon Dogara “left the Leadership Awards midway to attend to pressing national calls”, only to show up in the presidential villa. What was so important to just both of them? Their offices and duties are not closely related, the Speaker does not answer to the President. Or maybe they’re just close pals, you know? Or mentor and protege?

Let’s assume none of all this concerns us BUT we still need to remind President Buhari, foremost anti-corruption campaigner that Hon Dogara is strategically walking away from the budget padding allegations brought against him by Hon Abdulmumin Jibrin. We can’t say this enough. That Hon Dogara is not facing any prosecution or is not even being investigated says a lot about the lopsidedness of the so-called anti-corruption war.

We also know that these closed door meetings became the norm with the two men when the budget padding scandal came to the fore. Let’s say we are convinced that these meetings, although may not be exclusively about budget padding, Hon Dogara cannot continue to keep mum regardless. Four closed door meetings in the space of two months is our business.
