by Adeniyi Abdul

Six months ago the Nigeria Olympics Committee called for song submissions for entry into the Olympics Theme Song Contest. Several songs were received from various musicians and after various stages of scrutiny, 3 songs were short listed for radio vote.

‘Naija Don Win’ by BIG SMILe emerged the winner on the 26th of July, 2012,  after weeks of voting based on the airplay the three songs received on all FRCN radio stations nationwide. The chairman marketing committee of the NOC has returned from London to give a press conference on it today, the 30th of July, and to push it into all NOC network at home and in London.

Naija Don Win is described by Big SMILe as “a pop/reggae groove that quickly brings to mind global hits like Waving Flag by K’naan, America’s Most Wanted by Akon”. According to him, “The lyrics can simply be described as beautiful, goose-pimples inducing. The vocals are a clever weave of Majek Fashek and Phil Collins’ kind of voices – voices that immortalize songs. Naija Don Win profusely celebrates Nigeria as if it were heaven. It is a classic that will live forever.”

BIG SMILe, is a reformation of the defunct band, CRUDEOIL, and made up of of Femi Afolabi-Brown, a lawyer who sings vocals, Babz Afolabi-Brown, an accountant who works on the writing and sound engineering for the group, and Clean, a vocalist.
