Nigerian Comedy Awards to hold in December

by Our Reporter

“The comedy business [has] blown beyond expectation, and Nigerian comedians deserve to be honoured in a grand style,” says Biodun Caston-Dada of the Nigerian Comedy Awards. The maiden edition of the awards, titled “Earn this, Earn Respect!” is set to hold in December at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos.

Caston-Dada continues: “we realize that most people have come to see comedy and comedians only in the light of stand-up comics. We want to use this as an opportunity to set the record straight, while giving honour to whom it is due.” For that reason the awards covers a broad range of categories including Best Comedy Album, Best TV Drama, Best Radio Show, The Funniest Movie Of The Year, Comedian Of The Year and Best Upcoming Comedian, who will win a brand new car.

The organizers will also pay tribute to long-standing practitioners in the industry by inducing them into the Comedy Hall of Fame. These comedians include Chika Okpala aka Chief Zebrudaya alias 430, Night Of A Thousand Laughs’ Opa Williams, Ali Baba, John Chukwu and Sam Loco Efe, and the late Danjuma Mohammed and Gbenga Adeboye.

Upcoming comedians will also get the opportunity to network and learn from established comedy professionals at an Interactive Comedy Seminar titled “Comedy – Not a Laffin Mattas”

Due to the change in date, registration for the award has been extended to Friday 29th October, 2010. Registration forms can be downloaded at www.nigeriancomedyawards.com.
