“Make public your own remuneration and recurrent expenditure as CBN gov,” – Lagos lawyer ‘orders’ Sanusi

A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Mr. Anthony Itedjere, on Monday gave the Governor of Central Bank, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, seven days ultimatum to disclose the detailed information of his remuneration and the recurrent expenditure of his office.

Mr. Bamidele Aturu, a human rights lawyer, who wrote a letter dated December 31, 2012 on behalf of Itedjere, said the request for the information was backed by sections 1, 3 and 4 of the Freedom of Information Act.

The letter, which sought to know how much of public fund is being expended on Sanusi’s travels and other private affairs, stated that the request was “in the interest of transparency and openness which you have been advertised as championing”.

Aturu threatened that failure to release the information within the seven days “stipulated by law” would compel his client to “proceed against you in accordance with the provisions of the law”.

Apart from Sanusi’s total annual remuneration, Itedjere sought to know the class of Sanusi’s flight whenever he travels within and outside the country.

He also demanded to know the CBN boss’ total imprest, the amount of his allowances whenever he travels outside the country along with the number of cleaners and drivers attached to his office and home by the bank.

Itedjere also wants to know when last Sanusi bought fuel with his personal money since he became CBN governor.

Some of the questions asked in the letter include, “How much is your total remuneration (that is salary plus allowances) per month?

“Do you charge the Bank or the Federal Government of Nigeria any fee outside your monthly remuneration? If so, state any such fee you have received since becoming the Governor of the bank.

“Do you travel business class or economy within Nigeria? Do you travel first class, business class or economy when travelling out of Nigeria? Have you ever used chartered plane for any of your travels within and outside Nigeria?

“ If your answer to the above is in the affirmative, kindly list all such instances specifying the dates, the airline(s), the cost and the duration of the charter?
