The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a man, 40, for attempting to transport Indian hemp (Cannabis Sativa) to China.

This is contained in a statement on Friday by Head of Public Affairs of the agency, Mitchel Ofoyeju.

According to the statement, the man, a medicine dealer, was apprehended at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), with cannabis he ingested.

The statement quoted the NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, as saying that the man was a serial offender and had been caught several times.

“The suspect specialises in concealing cannabis in foodstuffs for innocent travellers. Unfortunately for him, the parcel he sent through the Lagos airport was intercepted.

“While we were investigating this case, he attempted sending another shipment of cannabis at the Enugu airport where he was apprehended,’’ it said.

The Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, had assured members of the public that the agency would bring traffickers to book.

“The NDLEA has an effective drug detecting mechanism at all the airports. We shall continue to increase our capacity and send drug barons out of the criminal transaction in drugs.

“Let me assure you that no drug dealer shall go unpunished and we are working hard to address the problem of drug production, trafficking and abuse,’’ Giade said.

The statement said that the suspect would be charged to court soon.
