Maternal, infant mortality: Mortein enlists Rivers moms in anti-malaria campaign

In a move to support and strengthen the efforts of the Rivers State Government, Mortein Anti Malaria Campaign, the cause-led corporate social responsibility initiative of RB Nigeria Limited, was at various communities, Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and community centres in the state to scale up awareness on simple cost effective things mothers could do to prevent them, their little children and family members as a whole from malaria vector-carrying mosquitoes.

The Mortein Anti Malaria Campaign team comprised health educators, officials of the Rivers State Ministry of Health, nurses, Roll Back Malaria and NLNG officials. Their key message to mothers and community leaders was the need for them to imbibe the habit of maintaining clean environment at all times by clearing water drainages, elimination of stagnant waters and cutting of grasses within their surroundings. Other important steps are sleeping under Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) and use of safe insecticides which meet the WHO specification like Mortein.

Speaking on the essence of the initiative, the Marketing Director, RB West Africa, Oguzhan Silivrili, explained that it underlined Mortein’s commitment to the elimination of mosquitoes as well as put an end to preventable death caused by malaria.

At the community flag off of the Mortein Anti Malaria campaign which was well attended by mothers from Bonny Island in Rivers State, the Area Sales Manager, Mortein, Mr. Chris Nwanah, assured that Mortein would continue to support the fight against malaria, especially among pregnant women, nursing mothers and children between ages zero to five.

A mother from the community, Mrs. Moses Ezekwu, giving a testimonial on the impact of the initiative said, “Mortein has raised our awareness to simple things that we should be doing to prevent ourselves, our children and families from malaria. I commend this good initiative, and I urge every mother to come out in support of efforts to stamp out malaria from Nigeria.’’

Also, as part of activities to empower mothers to defeat malaria, free Mortein products and baby hampers were distributed to new mothers who delivered their babies during the anti malaria campaign in the state. One of the beneficiary new moms, Mrs. Mercy Brown, expressed joy at the cases of Mortein that were presented to her baby and for the fact that the supply of free product would continue until the child is five years old.

She testified that Mortein is a good product to use because of its effectiveness and safety which have been certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
