We still have no clue what the something is about but well, clearly she’s been busy. She first teased her “Becoming” project months ago and the past few days have seen more references to it on her social media. Now she’s gone and released a trailer. Or is it even a trailer? We’re pretty confused, to be honest. Maybe that’s the point? Because there’s no way the video in question was meant to actually help anyone understand what she’s up to
The (Kemi Adetiba directed) clip starts out with the question “who am I?” from where Toke goes on to recite some largely esoteric lines around the themes of identity/empowerment etc. She holds up a candle to papers with headlines alluding to occurrences in her personal life. She brushes her hair. She wipes make up off her lips. All of this while staring blankly into the camera. At some point some extra voices can be heard, berating someone for “not taking those vows seriously” because “he’s your husband.” No prizes for guessing what that’s in reference to.
While it’s confusing, it’s all a bit intriguing. Even more so given the fact that she’s been working on the actual project for more than a year. Toke’s always shown something of a media savvy that puts to shame everyone who’s tried to dismiss her, so we’d be lying if we said we aren’t excited to see what she has planned. Whatever it is.
