Two men, who are members of a robbery/kidnap gang have been killed, after a firefight with the police in Enugu.

The gang members were reportedly on the wanted list of Enugu State police command for allegedly terrorizing residents of Trans-Ekulu and other communities around the area.

Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, the police spokesperson in Enugu State, spoke over the weekend, where he revealed that intelligence reports made it possible to carry out the operation.

He said, “a joint operation on September 19 led to the arrest of two notorious armed robbery suspects who had been terrorizing the lives and property of the good people of Trans-Ekulu and its environs.”

“Our operatives swooped on them, following intelligence report as they were about to carry out their nefarious activities on that fateful night while operating in a Golf, Volkswagen car with Enugu taxi-cab colour along Enugu-Onitsha expressway by Trans-Ekulu axis of the state.”

“The hoodlums who were four in number, on sighting the operatives who already had taken their positions, opened fire on them and in the ensuing gun duel, two of the suspects were fatally injured, leaving them dead, while the rest believed to have sustained bullet wounds escaped into the bush.”

Amaraizu also stated that one of the killed gang members was the leader of the gang, adding that a manhunt had been launched for the escaped gang members.

“Among the deceased suspects is the leader of the gang, simply called Udochukwu, and his cohort also identified as Onyebuchi. They had been on the wanted list of the operatives over some killings in Trans-Ekulu and Abakpa, including the last two weeks incident of killings at a filling station in Trans-Ekulu, among others.”

“Manhunt on the escapee gang members have been intensified by the operatives. The state command is also appealing to hospital operators and good people of the state with information about anyone with injury/injuries suspected to be that of bullet, to report promptly to any nearby Police Division or contact the state command.”
