Lionel Messi dethrones Cristiano Ronaldo to win 5th FIFA #BallondOr

Barcelona/Argentinean attacker Lionel Messi has usurped his Real Madrid/Portuguese counterpart, Cristiano Ronaldo, to win a record fifth FIFA male player of the year award- also known as the FIFA Ballon d’or.

He also beat his Barcelona team mate and Brazilian attacker; Neymar who was also nominated for the prestigious award.

After leading Barcelona to wins in La Liga, the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League — the first time any club has completed a treble twice — and with 52 goals to his name in 2015, the five-foot-seven maestro was the favourite to win a record fifth Ballon d’Or at age 28.

The 33 year old American scored three goals in the opening minutes of the Women’s World Cup final to win the coveted trophy for the United States.

More than that, she proved herself a team leader as legendary striker Abby Wambach prepared to close the door on her career.
