Michael Orodare: Mega Party: For who? Another story again (Y! Politico)

by Michael Orodare

opposition parties

The evil many of the political opponents do in the name of opposition knows no bound, their actions and what some of them profess now portray them as desperadoes rather than a veritable alternative(s)…

If there is any reason why I like competition, it must be because it does not give room for complacency among members of the ruling class.

In a society with perfect political competition, members of the ruling class are always kept on their toes; they will never want to give room for failure, having the knowledge of the resultant effect of any lackadaisical attitude to public service. They know the opposition is just like the Biblical enemy eager and battle ready to sow tares among the wheat of the sleeping men, for those in power sleep is dangerous when there is an active and a formidable opposition.

As good as competition is, it seems to have been bastardised in this part of the world. The evil many of the political opponents do in the name of opposition knows no bound, their actions and what some of them profess now portray them as desperadoes rather than a veritable alternative to correct the supposed anomalies of the ruling party.

Which is why the proposed Mega-Party by some opposition parties might fail at conception. Before you cast that stone at me, ask yourself if truly those proposing a mega-party have the credibility to challenge the government in power? do they have the kind of manifesto to convince the populace to vote for them?

The gospel truth is that some of them are just desperate for power, they want to control the national wealth, some have no convincing intent to qualify for the change the Nigerian nation truly deserves.

This leaves one to ponder, what does Gen. Muhammadu Buhari want at the Aso-Villa at 70? What does the leadership of the other opposition parties involved also look forward to gain from the proposed Mega-party? Popularity or kingdom expansion? Heaven knows.

Is this not the same opposition party whose leadership was alleged to have collected billions of naira from the presidency few days to the

2011 Presidential election, to step down its candidate for President Jonathan? According to political pundits; Nuhu Ribadu was sold for N16bn.

They’ve not cleaned their hands of the stains of the 2011 elections and now that 2015 elections is around the corner, they want to tell us another story again.

After all the deception, cajoling and political manipulations from the self-acclaimed ‘messiahs’, who else would pay the price, if not the Nigerian youths. Of course, when election comes, the jobless youths will be delegated to paste posters of candidates from one community to another, they will be recruited  as INEC ad-hoc staff to assist in conducting ‘smooth’ elections in the name of service to their fatherland, denying them their rights to vote in the election. They would be denied the privilege to participate massively in an election which their participation could right the age-old wrong. And often times they end up as victims of mass killings in areas where results didn’t favour their favourite candidates, like we witnessed in some northern states after the 2011 Presidential election.

When the fathers eat the sour grapes, whose teeth would be set on the edge, if not the young ones?

The opposition parties should tell us what they can do better to better the woes of the nation, we need a formidable opposition to get the ruling party working if it cannot wrest power from it. But it’s quite unfortunate that the profile of those concerned have not proven to us that it is the kind of change we need. Their individual interest also seems to have been placed above national interest, they all want power. After achieving their aims, what next? Another power tussle and sharing formula palava.

If their intent isn’t clearly juxtaposed from what many have believed they stand for, then I can announce to them that come 2015, there might be no change in the way things have been at the central.

In 2015, we refuse to be deceived again.

  1. This particular opposition Mega party are clearly in it for their own gains. They have nothing better to offer. Nigerian stands a better chance of continuing to push the ruling party, as we have been doing lately, for change; demand the basics, demand freedom of information, push for better amenities etc. There is greater success in that for us, than falling for some delusional pack of power-hungry failures.

Evidence of what ACN has in store for Nigeria, is what was exhibited recently in the truncation of justice in Lagos in the Jide Obanikoro case, the hate campaign on Mimoko in Ondo, the raiding of Senator Folarin's house in Oyo under the pretense of arm stocking. Unfortunately, i for one will not mortgage my children's future and vote for the ACN. If CPC out of greed decides to lump itself with such vile no-gooders, that is their problem. But, Nigerians will not be fooled again!

  2. Great article, even if the conclusion was somewhat nonsensical. Without an alternative force to contend with the political elites in Nigeria, you will be deceived in 2015.
