‘Immunity must be respected whether anybody likes it or not’ – Mimiko

Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko has said the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) must respect the immunity of sitting governors.

The governor said section 308 of the constitution – which guarantees immunity – was put in place to allow state governors focus fully on their responsibilities and not get distracted by trials.

Mimiko, the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors’ forum, made the assertion on Tuesday while reacting to the freezing of the account of Ayodele Fayose, the Ekiti state governor.

The governor urged President Buhari to call the EFCC to order while lamenting the gross abuse of the constitution under his watch.

“What has happened is a blatant and violent infraction on the provision of the constitution and our democracy.”

“It’s an attempt to subvert the constitution and it is fascist. The intention is to achieve a penal sanction without going through the due criminal procedure and criminal proceedings”

“Immunity is part of the constitution and it must be respected whether anybody likes it or not.”
