A 30-year-old man was accused of sexually assaulting two little girls aged 6 and 9 and threatening to cut their throats if they told anyone.

The man was jailed after it was heard in court that he tricked the children into leaving a party and sexually assaulted them five times before they managed to escape, terrified of the alleged paedophile.

He was said to have threatened the two minors saying: “Do what I tell you or I will cut your parents’ throat and then cut yours.”

Mirror News reports:

The children eventually managed to escape through a window and returned to their parents, the Irish Mirror reports.

The six-year-old’s dad told Dublin’s Central Criminal Court that hearing what happened to her was “like a bomb going off” in his head.

The younger girl’s dad said: “This just blows your mind to know she was used in such a disgusting and abusive way.”

The older girl’s mother added in a victim impact statement she lies awake at night tormented by unbearable images and that she imagines hearing her child’s heart beating in fear.

She said her daughter has gone from being a happy exuberant child to a worried, reserved person who doesn’t feel safe.

The beast, from Galway, pleaded guilty to three counts of rape of the nine-year-old and two counts of rape of the six-year-old girl on September 28

Mr Justice Paul Carney said he found it too upsetting to recite the facts of the case.

He added: “A feature of this case was to observe the faces of the hard-boiled press corps having difficulty listening to the facts emerging.”

He said that it was too serious a case for any discount in sentence to come from the accused’s co-operation with police after his arrest or from his early plea of guilty.

After sentence was passed the man asked to apologise to the victims.

He has more than 70 previous convictions including criminal damage, assault, robbery and possession of knives and he had just been released from Castlerea Prison three days before the offences.

Insp Aidan Minnock told Patrick McGrath SC, prosecuting, the paedophile told the girls he had a six-year-old sister in his flat who was too shy to come out and play.

The girls were playing on a green close to a house in which their families were attending another child’s birthday party at around 4pm.

They told specialist child interviewers they were playing on a tree and hadn’t eaten any cake yet.

They noticed him looking at them and one girl said later she thought he was planning his attack.

He approached them and asked if they wanted to meet his six-year-old sister in his flat. He told them: “She is a bit shy now, come on, come on.”

One girl told police: “It’s like as if we were lured in.”

Once inside he trapped them and took their clothes and his own off. During the 20-minute ordeal he told them: “Do what I tell you or I will cut your parents’ throats and then cut yours.”

When the younger girl began to cry he told her to shut up and slapped her face.

He told her again if she opened her mouth he would cut her mum and dad’s throats. She told police this made her feel very sad because she didn’t want him to cut their throats.

He then raped the older girl a number of times on a mattress on the floor. He next raped the younger victim before finally raping the older girl again.

After he was finished, he let the children put their clothes back on but not their shoes.

He told them to lie down on the floor for 20 minutes and he left the room.

The older girl opened a window and the pair climbed through. She told the younger girl they would be in the flat for ever if they didn’t flee.

Both girls were taken to hospital where they had to get injections for Aids, hepatitis C and other STDs.

The father of the six-year-old said having to make this decision to give his daughter this treatment and “poison” was one of the hardest of his life.

The accused was identified by one of the girls shortly after the attack and detained by relatives of the victims.

He initially denied the attacks.

But on the fifth police interview he admitted everything and told detectives he had been drinking cider and vodka since seven that morning and had taken valium tablets.

He added a local priest had given him €10 that morning for food but he had used it to buy cider.

In her victim impact statement the mother of the nine-year-old said she is living a nightmare she can’t wake up from.

She added: “He made a cold predatory decision to rape my daughter. He made her believe in her little heart that she would die if she didn’t comply. He gratified himself on the body of an innocent child.”

The father of the younger victim sobbed while reading through his victim impact statement.

He said his daughter has repeatedly asked him about why the accused did what he did. She described the pain of the rape as cutting like a knife.

The dad added she freezes or panics when she sees “creepy men everywhere, every day” and refuses to be on her own at any time, including at night time.

In a poem he wrote, he asked: “What can a daddy do to protect this princess beauty? Are we lost to evil?”

In a plea for mitigation Martin Giblin SC, defending, said the accused had a difficult background and his father had abandoned him when he was six.

He added in an extensive medical history there was “not a trace or scintilla of evidence of any form of paedophilia”.

While he was never convicted of a sex offence, he was questioned five years ago about the rape of a 16-year-old girl.

Last night he was in Mountjoy but because of his particular crimes he cannot enter the general prison population.
