#MTVMAMA2016: Here are the winners and losers from last night’s award show

The MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) 2016 held last night and it was not quite characterised with all the glitz and glamour that usually come with award shows but this is totally coming from a Nigerian perspective as only a handful of Nigerian artistes were in attendance.

Nonetheless, it was a fantastic show and it will go down in history as one of the best MAMAs ever for artistes who got deserving recognition. Per usual, we made a list of winners and losers and here’s some of them:

WINNERS

Wizkid: Artiste of the Year, Best Male and Best Collaboration (with South Africa’s DJ Buckz and DJ Maphorisa) Wizkid was the biggest winner of the night and it is now safe to say that 2016 is the year of the Wiz. The Starboy got nominated in 6 categories including Personality of the Year and Song of the Year for his collaborations with South African acts, Emtee and DJs Buckz and Maphorisa.

Patoranking: He won the Song of the Year award for a song we had all forgotten about, but My Woman, My Everything was and is still a brilliant track, enough thanks to Wande Coal. Patoranking also won on the red carpet in his bespoke suit killing it in every single picture. Man came ready!

Bonang Matheba: The South African media personality was approached to host the 2016 MAMA awards only 24 hours before showtime and she took that opportunity to make history. She hosted alongside singer, Yemi Alade and South African actress, Nomzamo Mbatha, and from what we saw, the presenting was glitch-free. Go ladies!

LOSERS

Lagos: The 2016 edition of the MTV MAMA awards could have held in Lagos. Organisers wanted a vibrant city with an exciting culture and rich music scene. Lagos is all of this and more, but they settled for South Africa’s Johannesburg saying “Joburg will make the perfect backdrop for our biggest MAMA ever”. Lagos lost out not because it doesn’t meet or even surpass the criteria of MAMA organisers, but because Nigerians are just generally hard to work with. The attitude to work, perfect ability to ruin plans and still hide behind excuses and our lack of professionalism half the time must be all the reasons we lost out to hosting this year’s MAMAs. Too bad.

Trevor Noah: Our condolences go to every one who got a MAMAs tickets just to see Trevor Noah live. The upper respiratory and ear infection got to him really bad just one day before the show. Dang! The show had to go on without him though and it did very fine. images

Falz The Bahd Guy: The Soft Work artiste must have sworn he would win in the category, Best Breakthrough Act. His contenders were Simi, Emtee, Nasty C and of course, Tekno who clinched the award. But really how did Falz think he was going to win over Tekno, the only artiste in that category with the most hits. Pana, Duro, Dance, Wash, Where, Diana… we’ll stop there. The best artiste clearly won.

One Africa Music Fest: This music concert is a winner in its own rights but holding on the same night as the MAMAs was a mistake the organisers should have corrected early enough – that’s if that was even possible. No denying, a handful of Nigerian artistes picked the One Africa Music Fest over MAMAs – Tekno, 2baba, Seyi Shay, Olamide, Kcee and the likes were live at the Toyota Center, Houston, Texas – performing to thousands, but over here in Lagos, social media attention was focused mostly on the MAMAs.
