A Tuesday midnight fire has burnt down popular Kurmi market in Kano city, laying to waste properties worth millions of Naira.

The fire is said to have stated around 11:45 p.m and raged till Tuesday morning, destroying more than 30 shops in the market before men of the state fire service got it under control.

A similar incident had on March 25, destroyed more than 3,500 shops at the Sabongari Market, Kano.

The sad incident was confirmed by the State Director of the Fire Service, Mustapha Rulwan, who stated that his men arrived at the venue as soon they received a distress call from the market.

While stating that the cause of the fire was yet to be identified, the Fire Service chief noted that their effort at battling the inferno was aided by private companies that had sent out their fire fighting equipment.

“My office got distress calls around 10pm but we were able to put out the fire around 1am, although several goods worth millions of naira were burnt to ashes.”

“We were lucky to have quenched the inferno within a short time of our arrival at the scene of the incident. We are still trying to know the actual number of shops affected as the incident happened in the night. We recorded no loss of life but property.”
