Army gives second chance to 3,032 soldiers, 66 still on death row

Precisely 3,032 soldiers who were dismissed from the Nigerian Army, have been reinstated.

The soldiers have been given another opportunity to have a life in the military, after being sent packing over alleged indiscipline in the war against Boko Haram insurgents.

Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman disclosed on Thursday, in Abuja that 5,000 cases were reviewed, and 3,032 soldiers were pardoned and recalled.

“The reinstated soldiers have shown their total readiness to be re-launched into the theatre to combat insurgency and have now commenced re-training exercise,” he said.

Not everyone of them was fortunate, as the army authorities, also revealed that the sentences of those “with criminal cases”, were upheld.

Colonel Usman said a judicial process would determine the fate of 66 soldiers sentenced to death for mutiny and abandoning the war front.

“The condemned soldiers have already filed for appeal. So it is in the judicial process and it is on.”
