A Nigerian doctor resident in Indiana in the United States of America has pleaded guilty to charges of illegal distribution of drugs levelled against him.

Segun Rasaki has admitted wrongdoing after he continued to issue prescriptions for painkillers despite having his authority to do so revoked by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Attention was called to Rasaki’s illicit practices after pharmacists expressed their concern at his careless prescription of controlled substances.

According to reports:

Rasaki was charged in August 2013 following an investigation by the Medicaid Fraud Unit of the attorney general’s office and the DEA, according to a release from the Marion County prosecutor’s office.

The investigation began in 2009 after the DEA received calls from pharmacists voicing their concerns over Rasaki’s prescribing practices, the release states. The investigation revealed that Rasaki had prescribed controlled substances, including Phenobarbital, Zutripro and Dronabinol, to multiple patients without authority.

Rasaki’s federal and state licenses were suspended in 2011 following an undercover investigation by the DEA.

In December 2011 the DEA presented Rasaki with court documents stating he issued prescriptions to undercover DEA agents based on inadequate physical examinations, the release states. His Indiana controlled substance registration was revoked automatically at that time.

In 2012, Rasaki was prosecuted in Marion County and convicted on charges of sexual battery against two patients. He received a one-year executed sentence for that conviction.
