[The Sexuality Blog] Nii Odartey Lamptey’s cuckolding raises important questions about men’s mental health

A few years ago, Ghanaian footballer Nii Odartey Lamptey had the worst possible thing that could happen to a famous African man happen to him. While his long term marriage deteriorated (he was married to his first wife for 21 years), he discovered the three children he sired with his wife were actually the children of other men, passed off as his own. The entire situation occured because Lamptey’s ex-wife filed for divorce suggesting that he wouldn’t pay for a university education for the eldest child in the UK.

The way Lamptey has handled this very complex situation is admirable, and after four years, he is finally speaking out about his marriage and the things he went through during this trying time. Lamptey’s interview with GH One’s Nana Ama Aboah covers a lot of ground, including his struggle with depression following the discovery and how he has managed to cope with the aftermath of the discovery, especially accusations from his ex-wife that she cuckolded him because he was impotent. He breaks down several times during the interview and speaks at length about how he still loves the children of his ex-wife.

Now, Lamptey is already married to a new wife and the marriage has already produced two children and one more on the way, perhaps as a way to once and for all, refute the accusations that he is impotent. It does raise the very important of how children become a sort of social currency for men, an achievement of sorts.

Whatever the case Mr. Lamptey is very, very brave.
