by Kolapo Olapoju

Following reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission may want to postpone Nigeria’s general elections, the United States insists for Nigeria’s presidential elections to be held as scheduled.

A statement released by the Deputy State Department spokesperson, Marie Harf said: “The US supports peaceful, free, transparent and credible electoral processes in Nigeria and renews its calls on all candidates, their supporters and Nigerian citizens to reject election-related violence,”

“The United States also looks to Nigeria to hold these elections on time”, she added.

Furthermore, Harf implored the country’s security forces to be impartial and fair, in order for Nigerians to vote “safely and without undue delay.”

The presidential elections has been fixed for Saturday, February 14, however, new reports by Associated Press, suggests that INEC has already reached a decision to postpone the polls, by a few weeks.
