A law to regulate the number of wives and children any family can have in Nigeria is a step in the right direction, Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu has said.

Advocating for the new law on Wednesday, Aliyu pointed out that keeping large families was no longer trendy and criticised men who got married to another wife without his senior wife’s consent- that, he described as unislamic.

“The scripture provides that before a man can take a second wife, he should first of all seek the consent of the senior wife to make her realise why the action is necessary. You can even go to the extent of bribing her to consent to the idea,” he said.

Aliyu while speaking to members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Niger State chapter who paid him a visit in Minna, also said: “We should do things that are convenient for us and for the wife and the children so that when we go to the great beyond, no one will be raining abuse on us.”

The Punch reports:

He also admonished clerics in the country to preach against keeping large families.

Though governor Aliyu did not recommend what he felt was the ideal number of wives a man should have and the number of children a family should keep, he said the days when many children were needed as a result of farm work had gone.

He applauded IFWL in Niger state for collaborating with the government in reducing most of the vices associated with marriage and other harmful health practices.

Earlier, the chairperson of IFWL, Hajia Fatima Takuma, expressed appreciation to the government for its support to the body.

She said, so far the organisation had given free legal aid to 50 people in the state and had increased its sensitisation of the public to their rights and privileges.
