No, no, no: American authorities deny there is a ‘zombie virus’

by Rachel Ogbu

You all must have heard the awful news, seen the gory photos, watched the shocking video about 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, the Florida man who was shot to death by police for refusing to stop chewing on another man’s face.

For many Nigerians, it brought back the cringing memory of Clifford Orji, the alleged man-eater arrested and jailed 13 years ago in Lagos. We have tried to comprehend just how mad one could get to actually eat another human, but now Orji’s case seems a small fry considering cooking utensils were found at his hide out and it was said he used the body parts for rituals. As bizarre as Clifford Orji’s story is, it sounds a lot better than Eugene whose victim was alive and had about 80% of his face bitten off by 31-year-old Eugene.

Rudy Eugene

That’s something, but that’s just one of similar stories springing up in the news. On May 31, a former Morgan State University student admitted to dismembering his roommate and eating some of his body parts, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

According to court documents, Alexander Kinyua, 21, killed his roommate, Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, 37, who was a native of Ghana, with a knife and then ate his heart and part of his brain. Investigators said the magnitude of what happened to the victim transcends just about any violent crime they’ve seen. Detectives who worked on the case said that Kinyua, a Kenyan, expressed no reason or remorse for his behaviour.

Kinyua was in the process of being expelled after he reportedly attacked another student with a baseball bat in the dorms on May 19. According to CBS Baltimore, the student was blinded in the left eye and suffered fractures in the skull, arm, and shoulder.

There’s more! An international search is on for prime suspect Luka Rocco Magnotta in the brutal murder of a 33-year-old Chinese student, Lin Jun that took place in Montreal last week.

An online trail dating back several years paints Magnotta –  a self-proclaimed gay porn star who was born Eric Newman in Scarborough, Ontario – as a sadistic scofflaw with a penchant for recording his disturbing exploits.

A deeply shocking video purporting to be of Lin’s torture and dismemberment surfaced online last week on the website Best Gore, but has since been removed. It allegedly depicts a man performing sex acts on a mutilated corpse as well as consuming parts of it and letting a dog feast on the rest.

Also, in Sweden, a man was arrested for allegedly cutting off and consuming his wife’s lips. He was apparently motivated by suspicions that she was cheating on him.

So what do you think?

Many are beginning to believe that these are not just mere coincidences. In fact, there are conspiracy theories holding evidence that we are on the verge of an impending zombie apocalypse.

Gawker reports:

It all started on 5/16 with an ominous story about a “mysterious rash” at McArthur High School in Hollywood that launched a HazMat investigation. Twelve students and two teachers were treated and released. The source of the rash remains unknown.

Flashfoward two days: HazMat crews were called in to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to determine the source of an “unknown chemical” that sent five people to the hospital. Theories abound, but an exact cause was not confirmed.

On 5/20, the first real sign of trouble: 41-year-old Dr. Zachary Bird, was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol near Orlando and charged with felony battery charges for spitting blood in a patrolman’s face. He was also “extremely agitated and enraged” and repeatedly banged his head on the patrol car’s plexiglass partition “until he bled”.

A few days later, another mystery rash was reported at yet another Broward County school. A HazMat team was once again called in to investigate, and once again left without any concrete answers.

The following day, a “disoriented” Canadian man was arrested aboard an American Airlines plane after he inexplicably attempted to rush the cockpit. The plane had just landed in Miami.

On Saturday, an unidentified homeless man had some 80% of his face bitten off by 31-year-old Rudy Eugene.

And here’s the bad news: Whatever’s happening in Florida appears to be spreading. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign tweeted the following the following warning to its students last night: “Hazardous materials released at Institute for Genomic Biology. Escape area if safe to do so. Otherwise seek shelter.”

And in Hackensack, New Jersey, yesterday, a man was rushed to the hospital after he reportedly cut out his own intestines and threw them at police officers.

The Department of Health’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an official statement denying the existence of a “Zombie Virus” following a recent spate of incidents involving people behaving in a zombie-like manner.

The agency’s spokesman, David Daigle, told the Huffington Post: “CDC does not know of a virus or condition that would reanimate the dead or one that would present zombie-like symptoms.”
