In a recent meeting held in Abuja, the Nigerian Leaders of Thought, a group which comprises prominent elders from the northern and southern parts of Nigeria, cautioned the groups fanning the flames of war to desist from such, as it threatens the peaceful coexistence of the nation.

The need for the meeting came about in the wake of the continued agitations and demands for speedy solutions to present and long-standing grievances from states in the South East and South South.

In a statement signed by a first republic minister, Maitama Sule and Ebitu Ukiwe who is a former military chief of staff, the group revealed that dialogue which hinges on mutual respect and recognition of one another’s interdependence is an important national asset that needs to be brought back.

The group also said it resolved to increase efforts that would find long-term solutions for the nation’s complexities and the search for fairness in the way communities co-exist.

“All sentiments, actions and activities that threaten the security and peaceful co-existence of Nigerians, wherever they live and work is dangerous and counterproductive.

“Every community in Nigeria has issues with the manner we co-exist; but these issues are best resolved through constructive engagements and dialogue,” they said.

“Elders and leaders should contribute to the creation of a genuine national platform that should re-visit issues that represent latent and immediate threats to our peaceful co-existence,” they said.

The group also advised that the government, media, leaders and religious leaders should push Nigerians towards eliminating threats and working for a peaceful solution to all grievances.

“We remain committed to sustaining our engagements, as well as involving all parts of Nigeria in a national endeavor to create a nation which has earned the right to enjoy peace and progress and the benefits of a democratic system,” they said.
