A group of surprised female members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) were almost stripped in an Anambra community which is said to have enacted a law against trousers.

The Akwaihedi community in the Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state is said to have a law in force which prohibits women from wearing trousers while defaulters face a N50,000 fine.

An NYSC member, Grace Uduak, expressed her surprise at being criticized by the community’s traditional ruler for wearing her uniform.

The Nation reports:

Another source, who preferred anonymity, alleged that 10 people had been fined by the community court.

The source said the situation was serious because policemen were not allowed to enter the community, as the monarch said the traditional court would handle domestic issues.

The law promulgated by the Igwe and the president-general of the town union, stipulated that no woman should wear trousers. Women are also forbidden from walking in public without covering their heads.

Our reporter spoke with the ruler, Lt.-Col. Wisdom Onebunne (rtd) and he claimed that the matter had been resolved. He refused to go into details.

  1. I find this utterly ridiculous! If the safety of corps members in that location cannot be guaranteed then they should not be posted there. How cab the community not allow policemen inside it? What sort of medieval society is that? If they have their laws, it;s their business as shallow and mediocre as they are. But I insist that corps members should not be posted there!

  2. Hmm astonishing! Please something should be done urgently about it what incupus!

  3. Why is it that no any here to say anything? Is it bcus d community is not in Osun, kano or Bauchi?
