Introducing the YNaija tracker on justice for #NYSCAbuse victims

Today, we begin an official countdown to justice for every corp member who has died as a result of the negligent, lackadaisical and absolutely unacceptable approach of the NYSC agency to the welfare of corpers.

This is not only for Ifedolapo Oladepo, the Transport Management graduate who died at the Kano state orientation camp last week, or for Elechi Chiyerom who died at the Bayelsa camp or Udeme Monday who lost his own life at the Zamfara camp, all in the space of one week.

This is for all the corp members who have been slain by terrorists in Northern Nigeria, who have fallen victims of electoral violence, who have died in accidents on the deathtraps we call Nigerian motorways, who have died from food or water poisoning and every other way the scheme has exposed Nigerian youths to danger.

In Ifedolapo Oladepo’s case, the NYSC coordinator in Kano state where she was posted, has spoken. He insists the agency “has nothing to do with her death” but we will not accept this rhetoric. Nigerians are well known for moving on from situations despite their pain and hurt but we are here to change the norm UNTIL justice is served.

NYSC has done a great deal of disservice to the Nigerian youths who pledge to serve the country under the sun and in the rain, with dedication and selflessness. This time, it’s justice for every deceased corp member or the NYSC goes. It’s long overdue!

We at YNaija have resolved to sit still on top of this conversation until it yields positive results. This tracker will run daily with updates of events as they unfold, so stay with us!
