Okada allowed: Ambode denies plans to further restrict commercial motorcycles

by Temitope Onitiju

Akinwunmi Ambode, the governorship candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State, has assured commercial motorcycle operators, popularly called ‘Okada riders’, that if elected, his administration would not ban them from the routes they currently ply or place any further restriction on them.

While speaking on Monday, February 23, at a sensitization and launch of the sticker, ‘Okada Allowed’, at a campaign office, in Ikeja, Ambode said the news being disemminated about a further ban of Okada riders in the city, were nothing but propaganda by the PDP.

He said: “We’re aware of the insidious campaign by the PDP regarding the use of Okada. Of over 10,000 roads in Lagos, only about 475 roads had Okada restriction in place and this is strictly meant to ensure safety of the people of the state.”

“All commercial motorcycle operators in the state will benefit in the urban renewal programme of my administration when elected into office.”

Furthermore, the APC aspirant reassured residents of good governance should he be voted into office, adding that APC had the interest of the populace at heart in every corner of the state.

“We believe that we’re going to take on the world. By the time we get settled in the office, we’ll start development programmes that will make the whole world start talking about Lagos,” Ambode added.

Incumbent Governor Babatunde Fashola had on August 2, 2010, restricted the operation of Okada in about 475 roads, of over 10,000 roads, in the state, as part of the Lagos State Road Traffic Bill into a Law.
