Olabode George’s incredible statement – and more in today’s news round-up with Cheta Nwanze

It is not just the 30.4 million potential #BokoHaram (or other insurgent group) members that we have birthed since 2008 that is the problem. The other problem is that we tend to treat things with a bit more levity than needed.

Quote of the Month

Olabode George said,

Majority of our people hurry after wealth at any cost without hindrances, without societal caution, and without the fear of God.

Chxta responds,

“Chukwu di o!!!

Sometimes, the source of a statement makes that very statement not worth giving any heed to. Sometimes, the source makes it worth giving that statement a lot of thought. Consider this: Bob Diamond, the former head honcho of Barclays Plc, who is currently at the Jamboree in Abuja, is credited as having told the likes of Kimberly-Clark and Procter & Gamble, that Nigeria is the place they ought to be in. To be fair, P&G have long since taken that bait and opened a humongous plant in Agbara, Ogun state to take care of the 6.7 million babies that Nigerian women pushed out in 2012. P&G’s Agbara plant will take 2000 Nigerians out of the labour market. While we commend them for effort, is 2000 enough to cure the coming malaise? Given Nigeria’s current baby boom, the answer is a definite NO!

It is not just the 30.4 million potential #BokoHaram (or other insurgent group) members that we have birthed since 2008 that is the problem. The other problem is that we tend to treat things with a bit more levity than needed. Thus it was that yesterday, months after it was promised, we were told that the global accounting microscope, PWC, will be taking a look at the government’s piggy bank. Sounds good on the surface, but given that this has come months late, I’ll keep wearing my cynical hat. The missing money has had a few month’s head-start. E don loss!

As has justice’s roadmap for the chaps against whom we all took to Ojota on some really hot days two and a half years ago now. Nigeria’s judiciary, ever with one eye open, has let more of them go. EFCC incompetence? Yes. Judicial delays? Yes. It all makes for a very heady mixture. And being that today is Friday, a good mixture for the evening’s festivities.

Bits and Bobs

It will appear that those of us looking at the APC askance are right. APC shokoto, Tom Ikimi has written an alarmed memo about the party losing members nationwide. If only they’d spend time building a proper opposition instead of criticising the admittedly bad government without offering alternative… Too many of us have forgotten about the #Aluu4. The case is ongoing. You can update yourself here. That Nigerians have no faith in our judiciary is beyond question. Thus it was that Jamiu Animashaun tried to visit justice on Philemon Tule with a N97 and a match. Meanwhile our booming trade in humans by bloody foreigners took a hit yesterday, in Akure.

Does anyone even know how many girls were kidnapped? Is there a database anywhere of their names, parents, contact addresses, and photos? So, if the military rescue some girls – how do we match the rescued with the missing?
Why has it taken forever for Borno government – the school, especially – to provide a credible list of the girls who were in the boarding house at the time of the event and those who are accounted for and those who remain missing? Is this also the responsibility of Doyin Okupe and Reuben Abati? Or the first lady is going to get this list for us?

Chxta responds,

Let’s start with the obvious fact that Nigeria does not have a functional database for anything. Why, even the Statistician General told the world that when he was announcing our brand new GDP. But that’s besides the point.
The bottom line is that at the very least 180 Nigerian girls are missing, and that is 180 too many.
Regarding your last line, let the recriminations start after, if ever, the girls are found. For now, our government officials (and non-officials) should stop making a spectacle of themselves and just do their jobs.

My fear here is that this N50 million offered by the police may seem worth more than what shekau may get from his ‘human market’ for our girls and devise a means to get one of his minions to pose as an informant to the police thereby getting funds to mobilize more attacks or ambush for our ill equipped men of the uniform.

And we have one hell of a First Lady/drama queen. Watched part of the video and couldn’t get the feeling of ‘staged emotion’ out of my brain box. When are the troops invading our land? May we not end up like Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan or even Libya. Amen!
We ought to be ashamed of ourselves, even the New York Times is blasting our first people and it’s not because they are paid to defame but because it’s the truth!
