Oluchi Umealu: What a guy! (30 Days, 30 Voices)

In LOVE!

My phone was ringing. I checked for the identity of the caller. It was him! In the space of 3 seconds that it took to pick up the call, I felt butterflies in my belly, warm fuzzy indescribables in my heart and the biggest hidden smile was on my face. Bobo was calling me.

“Hey sugar.” His sweet voice said. “Hi boo.” I replied. “Just called to check up on you. Did you get my wake-up text?” I remembered the wake-up text. Wonderfully worded to make me smile. I did smile. “Yes, I did.” I answered. “Thank you so much dear. It was really sweet of you”. Some seconds later, the call ended.

Whoever said there were no good guys in Nigeria must be… Well, living under a very gigantic rock. Bobo is the sweetest, most thoughtful and most caring guy I had ever met. Considering the tribal differences, I had to say we were off to a good start. He never missed my birthday, always called me at least 3 times a day and absolutely worshipped the ground I walked on.

An evening date had been fixed. Did I forget to mention that he loves to surprise me? When I learnt of the venue, I could not be more touched. It was the cozy restaurant where we had our first kiss. Romantic guy, right?

The date went exremely well. He looked soooo cute and happy. I looked… simply stunning. Halfway through, Bobo holds my hands and looks in to my eyes. Bells are ringing in my head. A thousand thoughts are flying through my mind. I smile back although not sure of what is about to happen. He leans across the table and gives me a lingering peck on my right cheek. “Okay….”, I think to myself. “What is going on?” Bobo stands up, comes over to my side and goes down on one knee. My hands fly to my mouth. Oh my God! “It’s happening!” My heart is doing flip flops.

Like I said, he kneels and reties his shoes laces. After what seems like an eternity, he looks up, takes my hands in his, smiles his 1,000 watt smile and asks me to marry him.

My mind freezes. “Do I want to marry him?” Maybe I am having a panic attack. Immediately, scenes and pictures, five years worth, of laughter, love, good and bad times with Bobo flash through my eyes. Then, I know.

He is still waiting for my answer. Oops! I almost forgot he was there. With an excitement I can barely contain, I say, yes!

A girl can dream, can’t she? Mine will come true. Soon, I hope. Xoxoxo.
