A Nigerian surgeon resident in the United Kingdom is facing prosecution after a pregnant woman had an ovary removed instead of her appendix.

Babatunde Coker was meant to supervise inexperienced trainee doctor, Yahya Al-Abed during the surgery at Queen’s Hospital in Romford, Essex but he didn’t.

Dr Yahya Al-Abed, a fifth-year trainee, had only been at the hospital for three weeks

Dr. Al-Abed admitted to making a number of mistakes during the operation which included removing the healthy right ovary of 32-year-old Maria De Jesus leading to a miscarriage and her eventual death.

Coker, a senior surgical consultant, is accused of negligence for failing to either conduct the surgery himself or supervise the operation.

Mrs. De Jesus was 21 weeks pregnant when she was admitted due to abdominal pains. She died of multiple organ failure.
