Onyeka Onwenu ‘appears at ICPC over N17m fraud’

After shunning the Independent Corrupt Pratices and Other related Offences commission (ICPC), the director-general of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Onyeka Onwenu, finally honored the commission’s invitation over the alleged N17million contract bribe.

She was granted an administrative bail.

A source at the ICPC office revealed that Onwenu appeared before the ICPC on Monday and after answering some questions, she was allowed to go home on recognition, while investigation into the alleged bribe continues.

The source did not confirm the outcome of the investigation on whether she was indicted or not but promised to make the matter public when the need arises.

Other key persons interrogated on the issue include Mukhtar Usman, Jauro Jibrin and Sadeeq Umar, who were all released pending the conclusion of the investigation.

Onwenu’s personal assistant, Chika Abazu, was arraigned before a Federal Capital Territory High Court last month on a six-count charge of bribery and gratification.

Though Abazu pleaded not guilty to the charges, he was denied bail and ordered to be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Kuje, until the case is dispensed with.
