Opinion: Benin-Ore road, highway or deathtrap?

by Jennifer E. Onochie

When accidents happen on this road you hear people scream, bad roads o! Bad leaders! Hey devil! But has anyone ever thought of the fact that some accidents on our roads are caused by mere mortals, without spiritual powers.

When people use the vernacular saying ‘who no go no know’ it takes a person who has really ‘gone’ to understand. It is now a fact that Nigerian roads have become death traps, the Benin-Ore road is however not just a death trap, but also a potential grave yard.

The causes of accidents on this road range from the bad nature of the road, reckless driving, vehicle faults and to some people witchcraft. When accidents happen on this road you hear people scream, bad roads o! Bad leaders! Hey devil! But has anyone ever thought of the fact that some accidents on our roads are caused by mere mortals, without spiritual powers. People who are high enough, to rob others in broad day light.

One very sad one happened recently, (name of transport line withheld), a bus plying this road encountered these thieves who think robbing from motorists has become their birth right, and as the driver tried to do the sudden reverse, the car began to tumble and in the end two lives were lost.

Many lives have been lost as a result of these robbery attacks. Can people attribute this to witchcraft or are these hoodlums now witches without supernatural powers? These are mere mortals sending people to their early graves because they claim to have suffered enough and have chosen the faster way to wealth.

If mistakenly these robbers are caught you see them begging for second chance like they gave the lives they took the opportunity to even beg. When these robbers stand on the way, they are mean looking and their countenance scream “no mercy” they shoot randomly even when they don’t know what it means to get shot.

When they have had their fill, the “quick response” police officers come shooting into the bush that gave these robbers safe passage. ‘NIGERIA GO BETTER’ there is no doubt about that but the only hard and fast rule to this is, it begins with YOU and I.
