Opinion: Don’t call me poor- I am satisfied

by Yusuf Abdulkadir Hassan

The dearth of thoughts, the absence of ideas, the loss of mind and reasoning. Poverty.

Poverty is not the absence of money or the inability to live beyond $1 a day.  Poverty should be the inability to afford what you earnestly desire. We often mistake poverty for the inability of people to earn beyond what we term reasonable amount required to live a particular standard of lifestyle.

We are all poor relative to what we desire but cannot afford.

Admittedly, the fight for and the continued clamour for the improvement of the standard of living of individuals is desirable, the believe that they all want to and actually desire a minimum standard of living in tandem with what we experienced, are used to or what we believe they deserve is not.

This noble fight should not be about what we believe is right for them but rather what they believe is right for them.

Questions tend to arise, such as:

What is the basis for your argument?

Do you mean people are comfortable living in squalor?

What is your argument for the discrepancy between the haves and have not?

The answer is one word: Contentment.

People are not necessarily content with poverty, poverty arises out of the inability to be content. Contentment is gaining satisfaction from the little or the much of what you have. Managing efficiently your available resources would ensure that you gain satisfaction in the usage of your funds.

The noble fight to be fought instead of the clamour for poverty should be satisfaction, contentment and creativity.

There are people who actively live a life of contentment, being satisfied with what little they have and actually choosing to have extremely little to live by.

One is only poor, only if they choose to be- Dolly Parton
