Opinion: Ending sexual and domestic violence

by Divya Dube

Abuse in any form tends to impact the lives of survivors for a long, long time. The trauma a person undergoes is not only painful, but it deeply affects the mental stability of an individual, which is hard to recover from.

More than 70% of the total population across the world, have faced either sexual or domestic violence, irrespective of their gender or age.

However, women and children are more susceptible to abuse than men. Statistics have shown that almost 54% of women were violated by their respective partners, while 18% were stalked. Crime against children is more horrifying, as they are more vulnerable to not only the assaults, but also to emotional and educational negligence.

Being subjected to continuous violence or physical injuries or sexual assaults causes severe depression within the victims, that can generate psychotic symptoms leading to hallucinations or suicidal tendencies, and can even become dangerous for others too, if left untreated.

There are various ways to prevent them from happening, such as standing up against the violence, empowering women, creating protective and supportive environments for the victims etc.

Abuse is like a plague and it is our social responsibility to ensure that it’s put to an end as soon as possible. The following infographic focuses on the abuse statistics and awareness:
