Opinion: Now that the APC has been registered…

It is also important that APC should understand that the ultimate is not just dislodging the ruling party from power, but, crumbling their sophisticated system characterized by corruption…

I will like to congratulate members of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Congress for Progressive Change and All Nigeria Peoples Party, who collectively felt it was time to jettison all personal and regional interests, make necessary sacrifices and provide a formidable political platform for contest in the next election to rescue our disintegrating nation from the hands of a political party whose ideology is based on looting public fund, and keeping the entire nation in a quagmire.

I think members of APC should not be carried away by the party registration euphoria and the fact that it’s the first successful merger in our political history. They should rather watch out against divides that might stem out of various interests of party members and the new applicants that might be seeking its membership.  Therefore, the need for the new party to put its house in order and strengthen its internal democracy to ensure that most credible candidates emerge for general election is imperative.

It is also important that APC should understand that the ultimate is not just dislodging the ruling party from power, but, crumbling their sophisticated system characterized by corruption, lack of regard for rule of law and poor leadership established over the years by the ruling party that has kept the nation in stagnation and abject poverty amidst abundance of resources.

Making democracy bear its real fruits as it is defined by Abraham Lincoln, as government of the people, by the people and for the people should be prioritized amidst all odds. There is a saying in Yoruba that “eni tio da so funi ti orun re lawo”, meaning whoever will provide clothing for another person should take a good look at what he wears. That is, APC needs to prove to Nigerians beyond reasonable doubt that it is people oriented. The 11 Governors, 32 Senators and 134 House of Representatives members that now automatically become members of APC need to start delivering dividends of democracy in their various capacities. Not just for campaigning to gain public acceptance or support against 2015 election, but to prove that they are genuinely out to better the lives of the masses and not for personal aggrandizement.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a well-established political party not at the federal level alone but at the grassroots, coupled with their sophisticated election rigging apparatus which has never failed them. In this light, it is important for APC members to know that they have only entered a race which require more commitment, unity and hard work than ever in their electioneering towards 2015.  Else, the major aim of the much celebrated merger will be defeated.

Lastly, Nigerian electorate need to see reasons to be actively involved in the next election. We need to ensure that we use our votes wisely and see that it counts. “In ‘Jonamaths’ where 16 is greater than 19, you need more than the substance and appearance of the law to be sure” (Conversation with Azu in LEADERSHIP Friday 02/08/013). We need to be determined this time to help INEC make our next election work to produce the real result expected of it. From the registration, voting and counting vote cast, we need to follow up. This sacrifice will not only save us from present problems, but also save the generations to come. God Bless Nigeria.
