Opinion: Religion, a tool for political sagacity

by Sylvester Orukpe

Politics, as it is popularly said, is a dirty game. Does it follow that everyone involved in politics will also be dirty? The word of God makes it clear like Jabez – as his name is, so he is.

The story of Jabez started in this regard. Jabez means ‘sorrow’ so he was always in sorrow. The name worked for him. The story is instrumental for people’s education because the latter part of Jabez’s life takes a new shape – he fought it out and so the name changed and his container changed also from the usual SORROW.

So every dirty piece of clothing must be washed clean enough for use. Nigeria is a country that is saturated with religion – its practice can sanctify the political space when those concerned use the rod in their hand to bring wellness into the sector, because the entire nation is largely dependent on the outcome of the game on top.

It is what a nursing mother eats she feed her suckling baby – if this is neglected, it will be at the disadvantage of her baby. The entire nation is eagerly waiting, believing and hoping for that change. This is not insurmountable. It is realistic and achievable if those concerned can reconcile the subject matter with their integrity as it relates to religion and in the interest of the entire nation.
