The ongoing trial of Paralympian, Oscar Pistorius has been filled with upheaval as the athlete has shown unabashed emotion during his cross examination.

Gruelling stint on the stand: Oscar Pistorius shows the strain at the end of seven days of questioning in the witness box about his relationship with Reeva Steenkamp and the night he shot her dead

Oscar has insisted that the shooting of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was an accident and the court has been shown a card she gave him on Valentine’s Day last year – the day she died.

The emotional card read:

‘Roses are red, violets are blue. I think today is a good day to tell you that… I love you’.

The prosecution has sought to establish that Pistorius killed his girlfriend intentionally but the athlete continues to assert that he thought there was  a burglar in his home. See photo of card below:

'I think today is a good day to tell you that... I love you': Pistorius wept in court as he was asked to read out this Valentine's Day card message which was given to him by Reeva Steenkamp, along with a wrapped picture frame with photographs of the pair in loving poses, hours before he shot her dead
