Police foil Kano mosque attack

by Isi Esene

Policemen attached to the Kano State Police Command yesterday foiled a suicide bomb attempt on a mosque at Janbulo area, along Bayero University, by four armed militants.

The incident happened around 8:30pm while many people were observing their prayer time in the mosque.

According to the Leadership Newspapers, the mosque is said to be close to the residence of an high-ranking security officer.

An eye-witness said some vigilant security men stationed in the area noticed suspicious movements by the suspected militants and promptly alerted the police.

The police responded to the call and there was an exchange of gun-shots and heavy explosion with residents running for cover to avoid being hit by flying bullets.

The militants were neutralized and normalcy was brought back to the area. The scene of the incident was later cordoned off by men of the Joint Security Task Force (JTF) but there were no reports of any arrests made.

The Kano State Police commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, confirmed the incident saying his men responded quickly to the security alert which resulted in a gun duel which foiled the planned attack.

According to the state police command, the suicide bomber was burnt beyond recognition while the three gunmen were brought down by the police.
