Police inspectors die while conveying suspects

Three people, including two police inspectors serving in the Ogun State Police Command, and an unidentified crime suspect, died yesterday when the vehicle conveying them collided with a car in the Itori area of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The two police officers who were identified as Thomas Olorunjuwon and Ojo Johnbull were riding in a Toyota Hilux van with registration number (Lagos) DF 413 AAA.

Eye-witnesses say the Hilux rammed into a parked truck with number, (Lagos) XU 502 JJJ at the Iyani Onigbedu area of Itori, LGA.

Sympathizers were rushing to the scene to offer whatever help they could when a third car, a Nissan Urvan passenger bus, marked (Lagos) XM 440 BDG carrying over 16 passengers, crashed into the police van from the rear.

According to the Nation Newspapers, The policemen were heading to Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital after effecting the arrest of two suspects at Sango Ota.

Police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the deaths.

He said the policemen died instantly, while one of the two suspects being transported died later at the hospital.

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Unit Commander for Itori, Mr. Fatai Bakare, also confirmed the accident. He revealed that about 10 people sustained various degrees of injury in the mishap.

The survivors were taken to Ifo General Hospital for treatment.
