Police kill suspected mobile phone thief in Edo

Samson Ahigbe, the leader of a gang of mobile phone robbers have been shot dead by the police in Benin City, Edo State.

Ahigbe, popularly known as ‘Agada’ was reportedly the ringleader of the gang which operates around Oba Ovoramwen Square in Benin.

Reports say Ahigbe was shot dead when he and his gang members tried to evade arrest following a raid on their hideout.

Their location was said to have been divulged to the police by one of the robbers, Israel Moses, who was caught trying to unlock phones allegedly stolen from one Eze and his girlfriend.

Edo state police spokesman, DSP Noble Uwoh, said two of the robbers sustained bullet wounds but the gang leader died on the way to the hospital.

Items recovered from the gang, according to Uwoh, are one locally made pistol, one cut to size single barrel gun, 14 live cartridges, nine mobile phones, one Golf car marked AY 542 BEN and N45,000 cash.
