Police still trying to identify cops who pushed man to death in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has said it has yet to identify some policemen who allegedly pushed a 65-year-old man  into a drain at Airport bus stop in the Ikeja Along area of Lagos State.

A video clip of the victims lying in the drainage unconscious and one of the policemen being stopped from escaping had gone viral.

Two policemen had allegedly pushed the victim in an attempt to apprehend a bus, with one of them escaping while the other was held by passers-by.

But the Police Public Relations Officer of the state has said efforts were ongoing to identify the two policemen and the formation to which they belonged.

She said, “We are still investigating and exploring the video. We are studying the video to ascertain if the (uniformed) man is actually a policeman and to ascertain where he is serving.

“We are investigating the case itself to ascertain what occurred. Members of the public should rest assured that if any policeman or policemen are found culpable, they will be dealt with.”

An eyewitness said some policemen came to rescue the apprehended police officer and also went away with the corpse of the victim.

He said, “I learnt the policemen flagged the danfo driver down at the Oshodi area, but he refused to stop.

“The policemen chased the driver from Oshodi in another bus. When he stopped at the Airport bus stop for a passenger to disembark, the policemen also got to the bus stop and ran after him. Out of desperation to catch up with the driver, they pushed the elderly man into the drain. The man should be in his late 6os. His corpse was later removed by a police team on patrol. The police authorities will know the policemen that pushed the elderly man.”
