Why the police struggle to curb crimes – IGP

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris has said only N4bn out of the budgeted N16.1bn was released to the police for capital project in 2016.

He said this on Wednesday during a meeting on the 2016 budget performance with the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Idris said the shortfall in budgetary allocation to the police had affected its operations and infrastructure development.

He pointed out that the capital budget was inadequate to address the security challenges, especially violent crimes such as terrorism, kidnapping and armed robbery.

He said N273bn was paid out of N286bn appropriated for personnel in the 42 commands and formations in 2016.

He added that in 2015, N8.9bn was released out of N17.8bn capital appropriation.

Idris added, “It can be seen that allocations to the Force is grossly inadequate despite the increasing security challenges it has to contend with.

“The non-release of appropriated capital budget has inhibited the Force from accomplishing its set objective of providing necessary tools and infrastructure for the enhancement of its operational capacity and capability.

“Arising from the above, budget planning and executions have been rendered difficult as the release of appropriated funds cannot be guaranteed.”
