A riot policeman was shot dead yesterday in Onitsha, the commercial capital of Anambra State when robbers attempted to escape from the scene of a crime.
The robbers were reported to have snatched a bag from a woman in the Fegge area of the Onitsha.
Sources say the criminals rode on two motorcycles to execute the robbery operation. They reportedly shot the policeman who was standing on the road, five others were also injured in the armed assault.
The Anambra State police public relations officer, Raphael Uzoigwe, however, told newsmen he is yet to be briefed on the robbery incident.
There has been a noticeable spike in the rate of robbery in the country, a situation which observers attribute to the scramble for money during the festive season.
