Policeman shoots bus driver over N50 bribe (PICTURED)

A policeman on highway patrol duty between Ibadan and Lagos shot a motorist on Tuesday, November 11, over a N50 bribe.

A commercial bus driver was recently shot by a policeman over a N50 bribe.

The incident occured between Lagos-Ibadan expressway at the wee hours of Tuesday, 11 November, as the driver, Umaru Bayi, was on the wheel of a passenger bus bound for Lagos from Jos.

As they neared Lagos, the bus was stopped by a policeman in a patrol van on the highway.

After intercepting the bus, the policeman reportedly demanded a N50 bribe from the driver, and the driver responded saying he only had N1,000 notes.

The driver reportedly asked the passengers to assist him with a N50 note to pay the bribe requested by the officer, but unfortunately for him, none of the passengers change.

After he was unable to get the N50, Umaru offered his N1,000 note to the policeman and asked for ‘change, but the policeman reportedly asked angrily, “should I be looking for change for you?”

According to eye-witnesses account, the policeman instructed the driver to alight from the bus, after which he allegedly shot the driver in the pelvic area and fled the scene.

Relatives of the driver say he’s in a critical condition, and he’s presently being operated on at a hospital.
