Policeman who killed motorcyclist in Ondo to face murder charges

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested one Inspector Anthony Nwadike, the leader of the patrol team that shot dead a commercial motorcyclist in Ondo state on Sunday.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU), Force Headquarters, Abuja, Ag ACP Abayomi Shogunle, the officer is currently in custody and his service rifle has been withdrawn from him.

The statement reads, “This CRU update is sequel to the viral video in circulation on various social media platforms regarding the alleged shooting to death of a commercial motorcycle rider “Okada man” by a policeman in Ore, Ondo State.

“On Sunday 4th September, 2016 at about 6:00pm along Odigbo-Omifon road within Ore Police Division in Ondo State, Inspr. Anthony Nwadike who led a police patrol team on nipping point along the said road allegedly shot and killed one commercial motorcycle rider (names withheld) following an altercation. The said Inspector has since been arrested and his service rifle recovered. Case is under investigation.

“The Orderly-Room trial (Departmental Court) of this arrested Inspector is expected to be concluded today Tuesday 6th September, 2016 so as to pave way for his criminal prosecution for Murder in the law court within the next 48hrs.

“The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command has since opened a direct line of communication/contact with the families of the victim and the community. The Ondo State Police Command is also providing necessary palliative to concerned relatives and persons at this period,” he said.

He also promised that the police led by Ag. IGP Ibrahim Idris will ensure timely delivery of justice in this case.
