Politicians who use posters to cover road signs are wicked – FRSC

by Kolapo Olapoju

The Federal Road Safety Commission has implored politicians and their supporters to refrain from covering road signs with posters, saying the action was dangerous to safety of road users.

The Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Ogun and Lagos States, Mr Godwin Ogagaoghene, said on Tuesday, 25 November, that safety on roads was the collective responsibility of everyone.

Ogagaoghene described the culture of destroying traffic lights and road signs with protests as unacceptable, adding that all hands must be on deck to stop the practice.

He said: “The signs are there but the politicians’ posters and obituary posters have covered them from being seen. All the speed limit signs and other road furniture that give warnings, information and direction have been blocked with posters.”

“We should leave them open to safeguard the lives of people using roads, especially during this time when vehicular movement has increased because of the forthcoming festive season.”

Speaking in a similar vein was the Lagos State Sector Commander of the commission, Mr Hyginus Omeje, who stated that politicians who cover road signs with posters during election periods, were wicked.

He said: “We want to condemn every act of covering road furniture with posters. We always witness this during electioneering campaigns and politicians have started releasing their posters. I want to appeal to the politicians not to use these posters to cover traffic signs.”

“It is very important that we allow these signs to be visible for our safety. It is an act of wickedness to use posters to cover road signs that government used the tax payers’ money to install for the purpose of guiding motorists. The signs are there to caution motorists so as to reduce avoidable losses on the road,” he added.
